Increased risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer

People with HBOC have a significantly higher lifetime risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer, as well as other types of cancer. However, not everyone with HBOC will develop cancer.

Stage 1: Almost 100% of women survive for five years or more after diagnosis. However stage 4: More than 25% of women survive for five years or more after diagnosis, but the cancer is not curable

Additional Preventative Measures

If you have a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network recommends surgery to remove the healthy ovaries and fallopian tubes (called bilateral prophylactic salpingo-oophorectomy by doctors) between certain ages to reduce ovarian cancer risk (35-40 years for BRCA1 and 40-45 years for BRCA2)
